Wheel Tour

The wheel is received.  The work scope is identified.  A work order package is made up according to manual requirements and details are entered into our computer system.  The work order is issued.

Bolts are removed from the rim in order to release the tire and then the wheel is completely disassembled.  When requested, tires are sent out for rethreading.

Wheel parts are cleaned.  The hub and rim are stripped of paint by plastic media blasting in order to prevent pitting. An ultrasonic bath completes the cleaning.  All parts are inspected as per the manual requirements (see NDT tours).

Non-ferrous parts are eddy current inspected and/or liquid penetrant inspected.  Ferrous parts undergo magnetic particle inspection.

The wheel assembly is painted with epoxy paint and oven-baked.

The hub is placed on the wheel building machine where the tire can slide onto the hub.

The tire is then put into an upright position and the other half of the hub is put in place.  Everything is then lined up for torquing the bolts.

The technician then selects the wheel type on the computer which sets the torque so that each bolt is torqued correctly.

The Bauer Howden wheel building machine allows one person to build a wheel assembly safely and accurately.

The link below will bring you to a short 5 minute video which gives a demonstration of putting a wheel together on the wheel building machine.  The video goes through the same steps as the 5 photos above using the Bauer Howden machine.
